Planning a kitchen counter or breakfast bar

1. Plan for convenience. If you would like room for seating allow at least a 9" overhang to accomodate bar or counter stools. An island cooktop or sink should be close enough to other parts of your work triangle, but be sure it's at least 42 inches from any adjacent cabinets, tables, or appliances. Expand that width to a roomier 48 to 64 inches if two or more will be working in the kitchen.

2. For general food preparation, your countertop should be 36 inches high, the same as most of your other kitchen countertops. For snack counter purposes, the standard 36-inch height accommodates most kitchen counter stools. If you prefer barstool-height seating, set the counter at 40 to 42 inches; for table height, lower it to 28 to 30 inches. Combine a couple of counter heights for a multipurpose kitchen.

3. If you choose an enclosed cabinet base, you have the standard drawer and cupboard storage options. For an open design, large shelves are ideal for holding pots, pans, and large bowls. Enclosed cabinets are the better choice for counter seating.

4. The cooktop needs either a downdraft vent or a hood suspended from the ceiling. You may want your counter to feature a sink and/or food prep space instead of a cooktop. If the sink is the only one in your kitchen, make sure it's deep enough (and the faucet is high enough) to wash large pots, and consider equipping it with a garbage disposer.

5. Each end of the cooktop should be bordered with at least 12-inch-wide runs of countertop.

6. Electrical outlets located on the side of the cabinet -- instead of on top -- help prevent electrical shock.

7. Extend the countertop or recess the cabinets for knee space. Swivel stools make access easier.

8. Seating across from the cooktop is great for a quick meal; make sure the countertop area between the stools and cooktop measures at least 12 inches.

9. Rounded counter corners help protect children from bad bumps.

10. Countertop material doesn't need to match the rest of your kitchen's counters as long as it's harmonious with the room's overall design. Similarly, contrasting counter stool colors create interest.

11. Pendant or recessed fixtures should direct light onto kitchen counter surfaces.
